I just wanted to post a little thought because today is World Mental Health Day and it really is astounding how many of us have suffered and continue to suffer with mental health issues.
Mental health comes with a lot of automatic stigmas. ‘You’re unhinged! You’re mad! You’re pathetic!’ All of those thoughts went through my mind when I experienced a really tough time last year.
The mind is a powerful thing, it controls who we are, what we do, and when it gets sick, it is an actual thing. And I’m tired of people not recognising that. If someone has a broken leg, you wouldn’t tell them to stop being so silly and just ‘get up and walk already’, would you? (Unless of course you were Jesus, come back to perform miracles.) So why is it any different if someone’s heart is broken? You may not be able to see the illness, or even the effects of the illness, but I can assure you first hand, that doesn’t make it any less real. Or any less hard. Or any less painful and debilitating.
Whatever you do, be patient, be kind, be understanding.
